Rhinebeck NY is a charming small town in Northern Dutchess County and a favorite weekend and second home destination for many who live in New York City. Founded in 1686 when land was purchased by Dutch settlers from the Sepasco Indians. A lovely stone house belonging to one of the original purchasers still stands. Known as “The Kip House” , at over 300 years old it is the oldest home in the county. Like many other homes in this historic and scenic district it is listed on the National Historic Registry.
So what makes Rhinebeck so charming?
The area is very picturesque with spectacular views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains in areas like the River Road Corridor.
The Village of Rhinebeck is home to many fine restaurants as well as unique shops and galleries, and with Upstate Films (a showcase for independent films and host of the Woodstock Film Festival), the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center and the nearby Frank Gehry designed Fisher Center there are always cultural activities to enjoy. Once home to famous American families, such as, the Astors, Livingstons, and Beekmans, Rhinebeck’s rich historic heritage is attested to by the Beekman Arms the oldest continuously operated inn in America.
Recreational activities abound with nearby public and private golf courses, a tennis club, horseback riding facilities, boating and kayaking to name just a few.
Rhinebeck is also home to the Dutchess County Fairgrounds where you can experience a living piece of Americana at the annual county fair. The fairgrounds are also home to classic auto shows, craft and fine antique shows and other popular events.
